He served as the Assistant Superintendent of Police in Karkala, Karnataka, from September 2013 to December 2014. In January 2015, authorities appointed him as the Superintendent of Police in Udupi, Karnataka. He then took charge as the Superintendent of Police in Chikmagalur, Karnataka, from August 2016 to October 2018. In October 2018, he assumed the role of Deputy Commissioner of Police in South Bangalore and continued in that position until September 2019.

When K. Annamalai was shifted from the Udupi district of the state of Tamil Nadu to Chikmagalur in Karnataka, many people of the district opposed the state government’s move. However, he decided to quit his position as Deputy Commissioner of Police in South Bangalore in 2019 and wanted to begin his career in politics.

Annamalai Political Career 

His resignation made him the camera-captured figure, and he said, “I was considering my options over the last few months, but finally I have decided to join the BJP and start my political career. I see I am a natural fit there (in the BJP).”

Another media report spread the news and revealed that he said, “I am planning to enter Tamil Nadu politics soon, maybe in another two-three months. And I am planning to contest the 2021 assembly elections, which will be held in April-May. I want to bring some positive changes to the system.”

K. Annamalai founded Core Talent and Leadership Pvt. Ltd. in December 2019. He assumed the position of Director. He established the We The Leaders Foundation a few months later, in March 2020. There, he was appointed Chief Mentor. This organization is in favour of contemporary agricultural technology and organic farming in India.

Joining BJP

K. Annamalai became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on August 25, 2020. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed Vice President of the Tamil Nadu branch of the BJP.

 He entered the Tamil Nadu state assembly elections in 2021. On a BJP ticket, he ran from Aravakurichi in the Karur district. He was defeated by DMK leader NR Elango.

Some DMK politicians began making fun of him when he joined the BJP in 2020. They said that while he was still an IPS officer, the BJP gave him preferential treatment. On social media, Annamalai retaliated. He said that the UPA, not the BJP, was in power when he was chosen to serve as an IPS officer.
